Dear Parents and Friends of Hurricanes Swimmers,
Welcome to the 2010 Hurricanes season. We appreciate your involvement
and the support you offer the team and its swimmers.
We hope the you will take the time to read the survival guide from cover to
cover. There is much valuable information for both parents and
swimmers. Please review the swimmer's responsibilities with your child.
You may wish to track your child's progress on the recording sheets provided
in the guide. Time standards are also listed in the guide. As soon
as your child accomplishes a time standard, he/she is eligible to swim at Time
Trials. We encourage all families to plan on being at Time Trials if
their child qualifies (either individually or on a relay) and to inform
coaches if they will be unable to do so as soon as possible.
We are excited at the growth we saw in the swimmers abilities last season
and we expect to see even more improvement this year. All meet results
will be made available ASAP after each meet, usually the next practice day.
Please assist our coaching staff by acknowledging your child's success (time
improvement, mastering new strokes, etc.) along the way.
There are some new faces on you coaching staff. All coaches names and
phone numbers are listed in the guide book.
As always, we can't do this without every parent's full cooperation and
involvement. Please look for postings for "help needed"
for swim meets. If you need information or have questions, please
see any board member during practice. We ask that parent questions
for coaches be handled outside of practice time. Our coaches need
to remain focused on the kids during practice.
Thank you so much for you continued assistance with the HURRICANES SWIM
TEAM!!!
Sincerely,
The Hurricanes Board

Mission
Statement
Porterville
Hurricanes Swim Program is for all interested boys and girls between 4 and 18
years of age. Hurricanes provide
a non-critical and safe environment within a competitive swim program.
The emphasis of the program is on participation, skill development,
fair play, and a build-up of self-esteem.
Porterville
Hurricanes Recreation Swim Team
The
Porterville Hurricanes Swim Team program is a recreational swim team.
We are members of the Central Valley Recreational Swim League (CVRSL).
Hurricanes Swim Team is not affiliated with The City of Porterville
Park and Recreation Department.
The
elections of the Porterville Hurricanes Board of Directors are held at a
public meeting. This public
meeting is held at the end of the season, where general comments are also
heard.
The
Porterville Hurricanes Board reserves the right to limit the team size in
order to maintain a proper swimmer/coach ratio and insure adequate pool time.
The swimmer/coach ratios are monitored throughout the season to
maintain this balance between coaches and swimmers.
Registrations may be held poolside to fill up specific age groups.
The
purpose of the swim team is to provide the opportunity for all interested
kids, between 4 and 18 years of age to take part in a competitive swim
program. It also gives swim team
members the opportunity to receive proper fundamental instruction to aid in
the development of their individual swimming skills.
The Porterville Hurricanes provides these opportunities in a controlled
environment that is both safe and fun for the swimmers.
We
recognize that kids will vary in their stage of development from one age group
to another and within their own age division.
It is important that kids participate and have a non-critical
environment in which to compete. As
parents it is more important to recognize that an individual child’s success
in not measured solely by winning or losing.
Remember:
KID’S
FIRST, WINNING SECOND!
Participation in a youth sports program should
be a positive experience. Sometimes
children are pushed into a competitive program before they are able to handle
it. Starting early does not
guarantee your child will rise to the top.
The truth of the matter is that very few do.
Eligibility
and Registration
All
children in the greater Porterville area are eligible and encouraged to
participate, provided they can meet certain minimum swimming standards
established for their safety. Age
is determined by the swimmer’s age as of June 1st.
It
may be necessary to limit participation by gender and age divisions.
Open registrations are on a first-come first-served basis.
Age division sizes are determined by the Hurricanes Board based on
coach/swimmer ratio and pool time available.
Pre-registration is held for returning Hurricanes, at which time they
are given priority. Open
registration will then be held to fill out the age divisions. Registration
will be considered complete when registration form and a medical release form
are filled out completely with parent or guardian signatures and appropriate
fees have been paid. The coaches
and/or staff may not hold places on the team.
Children
unable to meet the necessary swim standards will be given a refund minus a
$10.00 service charge. No refunds
will be given after the first two weeks of practice. No other refunds will be
made.
Skill

Organizing, overseeing, and conducing a daily workout for all scheduled
swimmers.
q
Overseeing the preparation of entries for swim meets in a timely
manner.
q
Maintaining an effective working relationship with swimmers, parents,
and other coaching staff.
q
Supervising and assisting as necessary all coaches in their
implementation of their workouts.
q
Keeping swimmers, parents, and coaches informed of meet schedules,
event assignments, team functions, and workout schedules.
q
Maintaining and promoting a positive team spirit.
q
Mentoring the age group coaches.
q
Performing other duties not listed that would help facilitate smooth
operation of the Hurricanes Swim Program.
Assistant Coaches:
q
Organize, oversee, and conduct a daily workout for all scheduled
swimmers.
q
Maintain an effective working relationship with swimmers, parents, and
other coaching staff.
q
Provide individual coaching to swimmers as needed and deemed
appropriate.
q
Maintain and promote a positive team spirit.
q
Conduct and implement an age-specific workout.
q
Help organize and supervise their age groups at swim meets.
Limited pool time and tight practice schedules
do not permit our coaches to supervise swimmers outside their assigned
practice times.
Selection
of the head coach and assistant coaches are done with direct input by the
Hurricanes Board of Directors. Coaches’
performances are reviewed and evaluated at the end of the season.
Every parent expected to:
q
Volunteer some time and get involved; we would appreciate your help
with at least one task at our home meets:
timers, recorders, supervise the swimmers’ rest area, set up, take
down and clean up.
q
Get your swimmer to and from practice and meets on time. Inform coaches
of any meets or practices your swimmer will miss.
Please
help make this a great year for you and your swimmer, get involved, and be an
active participant.
Remind your swimmer(s) to have fun!
Coaches
have limited pool time to conduct practices.
Please do not interrupt practices.
Coaches
are available before or after practices if you need to speak with them.
Team T-Shirts are available in limited numbers and
sizes.
Spectators
Please don’t take the outcome of each event too
seriously. We adults sometimes
place too much importance on winning rather than the individual
accomplishments of our kids.
Praise the efforts of all swimmers regardless of which
team they’re from. Be positive
and not critical of swimmers, opponents, coaches, or meet officials.
Swimmer Responsibilities
q
Attend practice on a regular basis.
q
Attend scheduled meets. If
you will miss a meet, please inform the coaches prior to the meet.
This will allow them to schedule their swimmers accordingly.
q
Be on time and prepared for practice and meets ready to swim!
q
Horseplay has no place at practice or meets.
Lead by example and act responsibly.
Remember, reaching your goals and doing your best is as important as
winning.
Have Fun!!!
If or any reason you will not be able to attend a
swim meet: illness, vacations, or
other family plans etc., please contact the coaches as soon as possible.
Line-ups for the meet are done 2-3 days prior to the meets; knowing of
absences ahead of time helps eliminate some confusion and saves time when meet
day arrives.
Meet Procedure
Swimmers should arrive 45 minutes before the start of
“Home Meets” and 30 minutes before the start of “Away Meets.”
When you arrive, please check-in with your individual
age division coach.
Swimmers are encouraged to wear a team suit if they
have one.
Swimmers are to remain in the team rest area with their
respective age groups until they are called to line up for their events.
Rest area is for swimmers only; it is not a babysitting
area.
Swimmers are encouraged to bring quit activities to
fill in time between events. Best
behavior is a must; remember you represent the “Porterville Hurricanes.”
If a swimmer becomes a discipline problem, further
program involvement may require mandatory parental supervision.
A swim line-up committee, comprised of parent
volunteers, will assist swimmers in lining up in the staging area for events.
These parents will be busy and do not have time to look for swimmers
outside of the age group rest area.
Please listen for your event numbers to be called.
At the conclusion of the meet (before you leave),
swimmers need to help pickup the rest area.
We are guests and should leave the area cleaner than we found it.
Swimmers and meet officials are the only people allowed
on deck during the meet.
You may sit in the stadium seating that is
available.
Away Meets
Host teams have control over their meet; we as visitors
have no say in the amount of heats or number of swimmers in each heat.
Swimmers; sign up for events one to two days prior to
the meets. Coaches will verify
what event each swimmer is to complete in.
Transportation of the swimmer(s) is the sole
responsibility of the parents or guardian.
Be there 30 minutes prior the start of the meet.
It is recommended that each swimmer brings the
following items: Two towels,
sleeping bag or something suitable to rest on, food, drink, money for snack
bar, and any quiet activities to keep themselves occupied, and dry clothes to
change into after the meet.
Swimmers are expected to respect the rest area
supervisors and listen to what they have to say.
Swimmers are expected to be there to swim; please pay
attention to the events, which are constantly being called, and know your
event numbers.
At the conclusion of the meet (before you leave),
swimmers need to help pick up the rest area.
We are guests and should leave the area cleaner than we found it.

Participation
Swimmers attending the meets are expected to
participate in at least one individual event, up to a maximum of three.
Based on participation, swimmers will be added to the relays by the coaches.
Individual meet requirements may impose restrictions which limit the amount of
team entries allowed.
Disciplinary Policy
If a swimmer repeatedly misses practice without prior
approval by his or her coach or repeatedly disrupts practice, coaches are
urged to take the following steps.
1.
Talk with the swimmer to help determine the problem.
2.
Discuss the problem with the parent and the swimmer and attempt to find
a cooperative solution.
3.
Final resolution may require limited participation with direct parental
supervision, or even suspension with prior review and approval of the board.
